Going North to Jasper

As Shirley and I traveled north we began to see sights so familiar to our eye.

Birmingham. We went there often, for shopping, visiting relatives, classes and eating out. When you see Birmingham on the horizon you know that Jasper isn't far off.

Next was Sumiton and the Tech. college where Elbert taught and was night school coordinator.

This is soooo Southern.....
a Piggly Wiggly grocery store.

Son Michael and his wife, Susan, met us in Jasper. Shirley was to attend her high school reunion there while I continued north to visit with Michael and Susan. We ate out, rode around the town that we had called home for over 30 years and then stopped by the cemetery to visit my parents and our son's graves. The flowers from Decoration Day in May were still very pretty. I am glad they haven't been removed.

In some ways the area looked the same, in some ways there were many changes. One big one was in the little community of Boldo where we had lived. It had been an intersection when we moved there. One country store. Later on we got a volunteer fire department and a water board building. Imagine my surprise to discover a Dollar General store at the intersection!! And, look how busy it was.

Farther out of Boldo, riding on Hwy 69 toward Cullman there had been a narrow two lane road that crept along with trees crowding each side of the road. It made a huge sweeping dip downward, went across Blackwater bridge and then made a sharp incline around a curve and up to the top of the hill. Well, this is what it looks like now. I know my children who haven't been in that area for awhile are going to be surprised.
Next stop.... Athens, Alabama and the home of my son and daughter-in-law.

Photo effects done with Pic-Monkey.

  3. What memories this all brings back! Love the photos, especially that Vocational School shot. neat effects, Mom. Like I said I would LOVE to go back...oh, that was in a letter I haven't mailed you yet. :-) Better get that in the mail! I'm so glad you two had a great time!

Read Patsy's comment and was blown away! Her grandmother's name was Dovie...and I've met ONE person once with that name. It is so very unusual, you don't expect to come across it. THEN, her son's name is Steven, and his Dad's name was Elbert. Oh my! Talk about coincidences! I can almost hear the Twilight Zone music! :-) What are the chances!

  4. It's amazing to see how much things change in a short period of time. I didn't know you'd lost a son, so young.
