Fallish Five

The air is definately cooler. I got up this morning... and I crawled right back into bed. Haven't turned my heat on and that bed was soooooo warm. I did me some snuggling with my covers. 

It's time for Tom's Willy Nilly Friday Five

1. A pizza party. Sure, sounds like fun. But, we residents did not know that it was birthday girl, Susan G., who was hosting herself a party. We got treated to pizza and cake. We played games and won prizes. That's my friend, Susan in the blue pants below. Our friend, Nina, is helping her hold her cake. 

2. On a trip to Alabama the 11th of Sept, we passed this huge field of tobacco. You just don't see as much tobacco growing these days so this was a thrill. 

3. And, as I returned a month later I took this picture of the tobacco after it was harvested and out drying in the field. 

4. I posted a pinterest photo of a fall decorated lantern and wondered if maybe I shouldn't fix up my lantern similar. Here is my rendition. 

5. and this little collection of fall leaves and such is in vase that once belonged to my Aunt Lena. It sits on a fern stand in my living room now. 

A Quilt to End All Quilts

Several years ago I saw this ad in a magazine about getting a picture transferred onto fabric. (Now days you can do it yourself on the computer). 

That gave me a brilliant idea!! I'd design and make a quilt about our life. 

So, I designed each square, depicting a place we had lived. We moved around a lot because Elbert was in the Navy but in order to make the quilt rectangular, I had to add more squares. So, I did some of our hobbies on that last row. 

I had no idea about who would end up with that quilt when I was GONE. And, each of the kids started saying it was THEIRS. What to do?

I still haven't decided. I don't quilt anymore so I can't make three more identical quilts so each would have one. Maybe my will administrator can hold a drawing. Who gets the shortest straw? Who gets their name drawn outta the hat? 

But, here is my quilt.... and at the bottom I will tell you about each square so if you want to miss that part you can just look at the quilt and move on! hehe.

2. Columbus, Mississippi..My and Elbert's marriage license and gold rings. A tiny cake, too

3. Jasper, Alabama where our first child was born. See I appliqued a cut-out of the state represented
     on each square that the children were born. Baby Marie is in a bassinet.

4. San Diego, California, our first home. (The Mexican influence displayed on that square)

5. Panama City, Florida... a duty station where we enjoyed palm trees and the ocean

6. Panama City, Fla. our second child, Steven, was born. He passed away at 3 months. This square
    shows the state and a cross with a crocheted bootie hanging from it.

7. Seattle, Washington... And, Mt. Rainier and a totem pole from the park where we visited

8. Seattle, Wa.. Baby Shirley came along. This square has the state and a rattle.

9. Havre de Grace, Md... Elbert was attending school at Bainbridge Naval Base nearby. 

10. Honolulu, Hawaii... Diamond Head 

11. Honolulu... and Michael was born. This square has a miniature flower lei attached.

12. Midway Island... The sand, the birds, the scaveola bushes

14. Bainbridge, Md. again. This time I appliqued Michael sledding behind our apartment

18. Norfolk, Virginia... Elbert was stationed on the USS Boxer. He retired off that ship.

last rows: hobbies of fishing, painting, genealogy, quilting and foxhunting. And, I'll have you know I embordiered that foxhound myself. 

Five Collection

I love having tea in this beautiful little cup. I bought it at an antique store the day I finished my chemo in 2002. It just reminds me that 'Hey, I made it. I survived!'

Mama Goose chose a spot to build her nest where I can keep my eye on it. Not that she needs me to watch out for her. Papa Goose is closeby. He's doing a fabulous job! 

My hummers are back in full force!! Love sitting in my recliner in my living room and watching them drink to their heart's content from the feeder.

I bought this little chef a couple years ago at a Home Goods store. He stands on my counter, watching me while I cook. Hey, who's the chef here!!

One day I saw a wake of water coming across the pond. Couldn't see a thing making it... until it finally stopped and surfaced. Dang thing was a turtle.

Today I am feeling very springy! I am so tired of cold, wet weather and yet here I sit, listening to a thunderstorm on my Echo. But, that's dry wet! (grin)

My daughter decided I needed a picker-upper and bought me a beautiful new planter filled with geraniums, zinnas and some sort of little white flowering vine. I never can remember the name of it. The planter went out on my balcony and since my balcony is just off my living room, if the weather is bad I can see that lovely thing from my recliner! Loving it. 

Easter Five

Today is Good Friday so I thought I'd feature my Easter decorations today on  Five On Friday - Thankful Thursday - Little Things 

1. We have an arts/craft day about every three months here at the apartment complex. This time we made net wreaths. I wanted mine to be Eastery looking. And, added the B so people would know that Barton lives here. 

2. I put this little bunny on my reading table along with my books, the grape bookends and the Himalayan salt lamp. 

3. I love my Mama bunny with her cute little baby bunny. It sits atop a fern stand along with a vase of spring flowers. 

4. My daughter Susan sent me this adorable Easter basket... The bunny is just TOO cute and the basket is filled with goodies, too. 

5. And, most of all, let us not forget the reason we have Easter. Christ's death on the cross so that we might live! 

Happy Easter to each of you and may it be filled with God's blessings, now and always.

My Christmas World.

Being alone, it's difficult to get in the Christmas spirit but I do believe that it is creeping in regardless of the resistance.

I'm 99% finished with my shopping. Still have a couple of packages to mail and every year I say I will get it done quicker so I can sit back and just enjoy those days before the BiG day.

Fall In Suffolk

I usually join in Michael McVean's Scribble Picnic on Wednesday but since I am posting quite a bit of art now I did not want it to dominate my Living Life on Main Street so.... I developed a new blog site just for my and my daughter Marie's artwork. It's Palette and Paint. Please check it out. It is also listed on my blog list on my side bar.

Now, to get back to business on this site. If you saw my post of yesterday, I am happy to say that my neck is much better this morning. The crick not gone, but better. Thanks for your advice and concern.

It's My Town Shootout today and I often like to showcase something around where I live. I didn't go far for these photos. It's the front of my apartment all done up in it's Fall Finery.

The corner of my apartment. I am in an end unit so the wall behind the scarecrow stops and continues on as railing. I can go out there and look out over the walking trail and the parking lot. Nice view.

One of the tables on my balcony has this display. I really need to give that jack-o-lantern a good scrubbing. Oh, and move him now that Halloween is over. He's iron and very heavy! I love him. 

I hope I see some of your Fall decorations before Fall is over. Oh Lordy, Christmas is really creeping up on us. 

My Friday Five

Well, heck...

1. A trip to the doctor and I wasn't too happy. My potassium was more than double what it should be. What causes that? My blood pressure is high, too. So, I started on a more healthy life style. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can stay with it!! But, just let a Snickers bar come into sight. Oh my. What temptation!!

2. Friday is just my favorite day to blog! So many friends out there to visit. Mersad has My Town Shootout and I like participating in that. This week's theme is Halloween. (what else!) So, this is for Mersad and all those folks who love Halloween. 

3. We don't have trick or treaters here in the senior apartment complex so I didn't buy any candy to pass out. I really don't think I miss it. Where I used to live, we had about 200 little goblins come every Halloween. That's a bit much, ... and we were in a small town. Those parents from other towns just drove their kids around from town to town, I am thinking.

4. On a recent outing with son and son-in-law (daughter was there as well) we stopped at a restaurant for a bite of lunch. When I looked at my pictures, I was tickled at the reflection I got of them and of me, the picture taker in that window. So, I will link with Reflections today so I can share this.

5. I love hooking up with Willy Nilly Friday, too. Such a fun time to share with blogging buddies.

It's Friday

         I slept late this morning. When I opened my eyes I jumped up, thinking...

It is Friday and time to join in Willy Nilly Friday, Five on Friday and Fun Friday Favorites.

1. I slept late 'cause I stayed up late!!! It was the American Idol finale's fault. I wasn't going to miss that and I was not disappointed. I loved LaPorcha but I really wanted Trent to win it. And, he did!!
He was so emotional when he found out he won. I love that about a guy. He had worked hard and he was so appreciative.

2. Tomato season is coming up. And, I do love me some 'mater and mayo sandwiches, generously salted, of course. No lettuce! But, yesterday my doctor put me on a low-salt diet. Now, how am I supposed to eat tomatoes, potatoes and eggs without a ton of salt on them? HUH? You tell me. I am p***ed.

3. The pollen count is still very high here - oak, elm and something else (I can't remember what). So, I am staying in unless I have to go out for something. I wish that pollen would just go away.

4. Several years ago my s-i-l made a magnificent entertainment center. Well, times and technology change. Tv's got bigger, cassette tapes no longer used. So, he built another one. What to do with one of the old end units? They gave it to me for my office. I am thrilled. It made a huge difference and I am so much more organized now.

5. I am counting down the days... this time next month this is what I will be doing!

A Trip and Taxes

1. I've been getting ready for Easter. I no longer have room to store a lot of decorations so I make do with what I have. Here's what I did for my front door.

2. I was so sorry to hear that Nancy Reagan died. She was one classy lady and she did what she had to do, regardless, for her Ronnie. You just don't see devotion like that anytime, anywhere. 

3. We made another little trip down to Edenton on Thursday. It was 80 degrees but the wind was blowing. I'd hoped to take the harbor tour but it's too early in the season. The trolley tour was up and running and we were the only ones on the trolley. You might say it was a 'private tour'. What history in that place. I can't wait to share some of it with you. For now here is one picture...

This is the Roanoke River Lighthouse. It was built in 1886 and served as a guide for ships navigating the Albemarle sound into the Roanoke River. In 1941, with the lighthouse no longer in use, it was moved by barge to a private location but fell into neglect. However, these people of this town know the value of maintaining history so they moved it to it's present location in the harbor of Edenton where it is visited by tourists. 

4. I got a picture of the osprey. They returned last week and are now quite at home on their nest high atop the cell tower.

5. Another advantage of living in a 55+ community apartment building. The tax people came this week, picked up our tax stuff and will bring everything back to our apartments today. You can't beat that. Now, if they would just pay what we owe we would be in business!!

Friday Thoughts

Friday is always the time for Tanya's Willy Nilly Friday Five. So, come along with me and I will tell you about five things that happened recently.

1. First of all I have to mention San Bernardino and the terrorist attack there and other terrible things that are going on in this world.  It all concerns me greatly, that we as a great nation have come to this, people attacking us, killing us, changing who we are and what we stand for. I just pray alot these days.

2. I have my apartment decorated. The space is small so my decorating is limited but I like what I have, it's easy to store and easy for me to get out, put in place and then put it back in storage again. I do like life more simple these days.

3. Yesterday would have been my and Elbert's 65th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, he left this world for a better place shortly after our 60th. This picture was taken right after we got married.

4. I love the way I feel coming out of the church doors after service and I hear the hymns being played from the bell tower. The sound just rings out over the town and in my heart.

5. Yesterday was filled with activity. At 10 I went to my quilt bee Christmas party. Here the gals are beginning to find their places.We had lots of fun.

and at 3 I went to a Christmas open house. (no pictures taken there). So, I was ready for bed very early last night.
