More Alabama Pictures

Tomorrow my son and I head to Nags Head, N. C. to join his sister and her family at the beach for a week. Until then, here are some more pictures from my visit in Alabama.

I was happy with this bluebird picture. Look how one foot is resting on the clothespin! Posing for me, I suppose.

And, yes.. my son loves to hang his clothes out to dry. The art of clothes drying on the clothesline is not lost.

When we were younger and living on the farm, my husband would find tiny little flowers on his walk about the place and he'd come in the door with them, held gingerly between his thumb and forefinger. I'd find a thimble to put them in. 

The other day, I look up and there is my son with these pretty little white flowers between his thumb and forefinger. Like Dad, like son.

We drove out to Joe Wheeler State Park where Michael's boat is docked. We saw lots of deer. The dog just goes nuts when she sees them. 

My son and his constant companion, Sadie. They are on Michael's sailboat. I am sure Sadie was the job overseer!

My friends, the birds

They are back!!!

The osprey are here... at least Papa is. He arrives first, gets settled in and then Mama comes and helps him get the nest ready. My spring and summer will be filled with the adventures of the Osprey Family. 

And, I saw this bird the other day in a tree just outside my dining room window. I didn't know what it was but believe that it is a pine warbler. 

I took the picture through my window so it's a bit blurred. To I D it I got out my bird book. Here is what I used to gather my info. 

I mark each time I see a new bird. But, I've only been doing that about 4 years. I wonder how many more I've seen that I can't remember!! 

Don't forget to run your clock up an hour tonight.................

An Entertaining Heron

After I moved into my apartment almost five years ago, I soon discovered the birds that frequented the retaining pond. It's just across the drive from me and I sit, three floors up, and watch all the goings on. 

This heron (or maybe it's more than one but I like to think it's the same one) has entertained me numerous times. I particularly like this photo with the wildflowers 🎕blooming at the pond's edge. 

I hope you have something from nature to keep you entertained. It gives your hours of enjoyment. 

                                                                                                             

Likes and Dislikes

For Willy Nilly Friday Five I decided to do a LIKES and DISLIKES post. 

                    1. I like fried green tomatoes especially with Green Goddess aioli. 

2. I dislike wasps. They hurt when they sting. 

3. I like bird watching. I get lots of beautiful photos that way.

4. I dislike workers who climb the cell tower and destroy the osprey nest there. 

5. I like (well, I love) dancing with my grandson. His 27th birthday is today.

Water Birds

I had a visitor the other day. Went out on my balcony and there the heron was. I was so happy to see him. 

This beautiful egret photo was shot from my granddaughters yard. Egrets are such graceful birds. 

And, here is a gull. I am not sure what kind of gull it is. There are so many kinds and I can't keep them separated. But, I do love the reflection in the water.

Various Birds

I've been on the look-out for birds in my son's yard but for some reason they have been hiding from me. Maybe they know that if they make an appearance, their feathers are gonna show up on the internet (blogger). So, they are hiding out. 

But, guess what! I have pictures in my archives... ha ha I win!

This picture was taken during my last visit to Alabama. A bluebird in the backyard.

Again, during the last visit... a chipping sparrow on the feeder.

and a cardinal...

And this killdeer was taken in Tennessee on one of our shopping jaunts. It was in a parking lot.

Red Bird In My Yard

Red is a color which always catches a person's eye! Don't you agree? Linking with Ruby Tuesday and Wild Bird Wednesday

We see a lot of red in the yard, especially the brightly colored cardinal.

Hummingbirds are attracted to red. This feeder is really brilliant.

These red flowers (yes, I know what they are, just can't spell it) against the white planter are just lovely.

I love this picture of a red-bellied woodpecker. Looks like it has a bad hair day.

No article about red would be complete with the bright red chest of a robin.

Egrets

I am getting quite a collection of egret pictures in my blog file on my computer. I think I will just clear the whole batch out. So, here they are.

A Bit of Beauty

I am enjoying my visit with my son in Alabama. Starting on week two today and guess what... no fights yet. hehe. We get along great and it's a more relaxed and peaceful existence for me. Who knows... hmmmm.

He's quite the grower. Best green thumb ever! I kill everything but he took after his Dad. And, he has two acres here to plant all he wants to plant. 

I took this picture of this flower. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. So, I thought I'd join Ruby Tuesday, Nature Notes and Pictorial Tuesday today so that others could enjoy it as well. 

There is a little yellow butterfly enjoying the nectar from the blossom. 

Hummers are still frequenting the hummingbird feeder in his backyard, as well.

Alabama Hills Are Alive

Michael announced yesterday noonish that we should go shopping for a chair that I would be more comfortable in.. his couch is definately man-caveish and hard for me to get out of.

So, we started a trip into Tennessee, Leoma to be exact. And, I am excited. Some of my ancient kin settled in Leoma and nearby Lawrenceburg. Maybe I'd run into one of their descendants. NOT.

But, the trip was camera friendly. I took pictures of a dozen barns and there were so many I missed. I need to go back. I'll share some of those barns with you later but right now I have three pics I have to show you.

The first one is of a lighthouse. Now, I never figured I'd see a lighthouse and true, it isn't a working lighthouse, just advertisement for a restaurant, but such fun for me to discover along the way.

Next is a killdeer that was hopping along in the grass next to the parking lot at the furniture store. Two of them, but I just got one. They both froze in place until we pulled out into the highway and then they scooted off. I guess they thought we wouldn't see them if they didn't move!

And, I loved this sign by the side of the road. We saw several and finally decided that it was advertising some event that perhaps a religious group was having or perhaps a musical production.
But, just look at the 'post' holding the sign. So inventive, so unique.

Bama Birds

Michael's backyard is a delight to spend some time there. I just love the peace and quiet, the many things that come to visit. I wanted to share them on a couple linkys today, namely Saturday Critters and Camera Critters

I can't identify many butterflies. I know the swallowtails. They are easy but the rest... I have no clue which this one is. Would someone educate me, please? He's such a beauty. Looks like Fall.

And, sparrows are just sparrows to me. They all look alike but I did I D this one. It's a Chipping Sparrow and was in my son's back yard. I love seeing new species that I haven't seen before. 

Everybody knows the Red Bird - Cardinal. They are so distinctive. 

I usually see doves on the ground but here was one, high up in a tree at the edge of Michael's yard. Zoomed in to shoot him. There were many more nearby under the feeder but I liked this shot best. 

So, that's it for this Saturday morning. I need to get up from this computer, get my day chores done and get ready for some SEC football. Auburn plays first, then Alabama. Of course, Alabama is my #1 team but I root for any in the Southeast Conference. Roll Tide. 

My Alabama Visit

1. Having a great visit with my son in Alabama! It's hot, dry and safe. So thankful that Florence decided to slow down and get degraded to a 2 hurricane. My folks back in Virginia are safe, maybe a bit wet but safe. Here's a picture of the sky while I stood in my son's back yard. Pretty, blue, slight breeze in the trees.

2. His deck and patio are such a nice place to sit and watch the many varieties of birds that flit through the trees and come to dine at the feeders. Such a peaceful place. You will see lots of pictures of birds while I am here....

3. Michael has some young scupernong vines in his back yard. Some small ones ripe but they aren't too sweet. So, he bought a container of these huge, sweet, juicy ones from a small market just up the road. Brings back memories of when I was small.

4. These white ginger lilies are edged one side of the deck. You just can't imagine how wonderful it is to sit on the bench out there and absorb the aroma!

5. I think this is a bougvenvillia (yes, I know I mispelled it) sorry. Don't have my Echo here so I can ask Alexa how to spell. he he.

Anyway, there are two of these in white pots flanking the steps off the deck.
