Desperate Times

I am most upset at something that has been going on near me in the last few days. Now, you know that osprey nests are protected by law. You can't destroy them. I did find out that you can get special permission to take them down but you have to have a really good reason.....

And, I hope these guys have a really good reason because....

I spied two workers on top of the cell tower throwing "my" ospreys nest over the side so they could install some new equipment. It just broke my heart. I did call the Fish and Wildlife district office, left a message and never had a response from them.

This photo was taken last year when they were one big happy family!

But, those birds... I wait each spring for them to arrive and watch the daddy go out for food while mommy sits on the nest. I have even seen one of the parents teaching a youngster how to fly. And, now, no nest.

I see the birds come back for short periods of time. I don't know what is going to happen.

Here is the osprey sitting on one of the new posts, looking forlornly at where it's nest once was.

Do any of you have other ideas about how I should have handled this situation? I even thought of driving over to their truck and waiting on them to give them a piece of my mind but thought better of it. There were two burly men and little ole me... guess who would have won that battle!!

  1. Oh, Latane...this is so sad. You did what you could. You reported it and that was truly all that you could do. If they had permission or not...it is still man interfering with nature. Will we never learn to let nature be???

  2. Reporting them to the Fish and Wildlife Dept was probably the best thing to do. And if they follow-up and need evidence, you have photo proof. I just hope there were not eggs in it yet. I would be very upset to see the nest destruction, too. Maybe the Ospreys will rebuild there, or find another nest site nearby.

  3. I am so sad to read this. I know how you have loved watching these birds. I think you did what you could. Such a shame that you did not receive a call back. Perhaps if you don't get a response, you could call local Animal Control to ask their advice - they usually are aware of laws protecting wildlife.

  4. Hello, this is so sad. I feel for the osprey that came back to where their nest was only to find it gone. I hope they go somewhere else now. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

  5. So very sad. I think you did the best you could in that situation. I hope it did not have their eggs yet and they can find a new place to rebuild. blessings ~ tanna

  6. This just makes me SICK! If they are going to work on that tower every year why couldn't they do it before the ospreys return, and of course leave the nest alone! I would call the Audubon Society too Mom, and didn't you say there's an Osprey Society. Go get 'em Mom!!!!!

  7. That's so sad! I've been keeping an eye on a former Osprey nest, but no inhabitants so far this year.
