The Osprey are Back

Sometimes it's the Little Things that make us Thankful. Also joining in Wild Bird Wednesday

I had never seen an osprey (I don't think) until I moved into my apartment across from a cell tower. This is my fourth spring here and I hate it when those glorious birds leave in the late summer and I can't wait until they return in the spring. They provide me with hours and hours of joy, just watching them soar, search for food, feed their babies, teach the babies how to fly...

This morning I looked out at the new day and there they were - my osprey! Well, one of them... the other will follow soon. They do mate for life and they always come back to their 'home' every year. So, yes, it is the little things in life that give us joy, make life more interesting and entertaining and teach us lessons every day.

  2. Oh, lucky you having them right in front where you can see them....

I love the little things too.... I befriended a crippled crow a few years back and he has a "missus" that goes south each year with their "kids"...he can't fly that far..they go all the way to Kansas or Oklahoma from Canada it seems........ so he shows up in the tree across the street each year a few days before they get home and hangs out just waiting for her and the kids. They always fly down to the front yard to let me know they have returned and he does his little crippled song and dance to get my attention. He knows I toss out some chicken or whatever if he does. I hope he survived the awful winter we have had..there is still 3 feet of snow on the ground and it was really cold this year... he doesn't hang out too near the house in winter ..he has to go with a large flock of cripples and misfits to forage and roost.
So, "Limpy" and the Missus usually nest quite near the house, but.. two other large crows commandeered their closeness last year and I had to be satisfied to watch them behind a neighbour's house instead as they attacked him if he came down into the yard. We were friends from a distance and I did one time see and 'talk' to him on the golf course across the street...he knows me on sight for sure..
Well, that was reeeellly long winded...just wanted to tell you his/my little story....

    1. That was really a delightful story and I loved hearing about your crippled crow. You could write a book about that crippled crow and his family. Something to think about anyway.

  3. Hello, it is great you can watch the Osprey's on their nest. What a great sight! I am looking forward to all my spring and summer birds to return. Have a happy day!

  4. Yes! So glad they came back even after being disturbed so brutally last year! So happy you have another season of watching them. You asked about the magpies. Yes, they are the size of a crow, and have long tails. From the back you can see beautiful blue and white coloring that is harder to see from the front or side. They are similar to crows in actions too, so a lot of people don't like them.

You were able to photograph the Osprey's on its nest and that is so rare and unique.

  9. Hello!:) How wonderful that you can watch these magnificent birds from across the street. A privileged view indeed. I saw my first IF Osprey last year, with a large fish in it's talons, unfortunately it was too far away to get a really good shot. Look forward to seeing more shots of them in the Spring.:)

  10. We often saw osprey nests when living in NJ and VA and it is amazing that they return to the same nest annually and better yet that they mate for life.

The Ospreys are nesting at Pickwick Lake, but I have to drive an hour to see them.
    Have a wonderful week!
