Living on Midway
I am very thankful that my family got to experience so many wonderful things and live in so many interesting places. One was Midway Island, a dot in the Pacific Ocean, just 1/2 mile wide and 2 miles long. The entire island was the Navy base. You can see by the runway in the picture below just how small it was.
Soon after our arrival there, it was Easter. We walked down to the beach (on the Western side) and let the children play in the sand. That was the most beautiful beach that I have ever seen. I made the girls matching sundresses and baby Michael had on his little romper suit. (they call them onesies now)
Midway is a bird sanctuary and the yard at our apartment often had albatross nesting there. Below is Shirley with a baby 'goonie' in the foreground.
Our only transportation was bicycles. Marie had her own. The only vehicles on base were for Navy use.
It's a shame the two younger ones do not remember living in on the island. It was a fascinating place.
After 18 months of island living, here we are about to board a Navy plane for Honolulu on our way back to the U. S.

ReplyDeleteIt's a shame the little ones don't remember. I remember lots of moments that I would have loved to have FB and digital cameras for recording them. At least, you can tell them about it with a few irreplaceable photos. :)
