A Trip to Alabama - part 1

Have you missed me? I've missed you. I have been visiting my sister in Alabama.

The day after I arrived we girls headed to our old home town about 120 miles away.

There were magnolias blooming everywhere. I took a picture of this pretty blossom at the rest area between Montgomery and Birmingham.

Mother's Day is always Decoration day at the cemetery where so many of our family is buried. I know this is a Southern thing , having decoration day at cemeteries. In years gone by everybody dressed in their finest duds, carried flowers for the graves of their loved ones, attended church or an all day singing and had dinner on the ground. But, those days are gone as is so many of our older traditions. Anyway, people still have a certain day that they decorate the graves. Neither of us had been in several years.

My sister placing the flowers on our parents graves.

My baby son is buried there.

We didn't run into many we knew. Just my son's friend from high school, college and beyond.

On our way back to Montgomery, I had one request .... that we stop at Green Top Barbeque for lunch.

You see, Green Top is the place for barbeque when you are in North Alabama or just passing through. I don't know if it's been featured on Drive-ins, Diners and Dives but it certainly should be. A dive... yep. Great barbeque.... yep.  Just look at my food. Am I making you hungry yet?

That was just the first day... there is more to come in a couple days or so. Hope you'll be back to see the rest of my trip.

  1. Wonderful trip! The barbecue looks yummy! I can identify with the Decoration Day thing! We decorate the graves where our relatives are buried on the third Sunday in May, which is next Sunday. Ours used to be a big thing, with lots of aunts, uncles, lots of cousins and a few grandmothers arriving for a family reunion after decorating the graves. Now, it has dwindled down to just a few first cousins and a sprinkling of their children. After my generation is gone, I think this tradition will cease:-(

  3. Sounds like a great trip. We noticed the gorgeous Magnolias when we traveled in Georgia recently... We don't see many of them in our area of Tennessee.

Glad you got to spend some time with your sister. And a visit to the cemetery is always important...

    Have a great week.

  6. Yes! I did miss you.....alot. I thought perhaps you were at your sisters....I don't know why ...I just thought it. What a beautiful picture of the magnolia blossom. It is good you went to the cemetery. I remember when everyone called it Decoration Day. I must go and clean up around the graves and plant some pretty flowers in the urn. I really like to go to the cemetery.

Welcome back and have a very nice weekend.

  7. I'm happy that you were able to spend time with your sis - I know the two of you have memories galore from the early years. The flowers you took to the cemetery are beautiful and made your family's resting places look lovely in the sunshine.

Missed you but happy you're back.
    Hugs - Mary
