Look at the updated Pretty Baby Contest post to see if you got the pictures matched correctly.
That was fun and thank you to all who participated.
And, now, from Babies to Barns.
This barn is found on Va. state hwy. 620. Again ... a bell tower. We did not have the towers on barns in Alabama from where I moved, so, they are fascinating to me. These pictures were taken back in the Spring when the corn was young.
Hey, I just thought of something. Perhaps these towers housed a pulley so that bales of hay could be pulled up into the loft from a wagon below? I've seen pulleys mounted on the outside of barns before but that is a thought. What do you think? Perhaps I need to ask one of the older farmers around here just what those towers were used for.

Maybe it did both! Looks like something round in it. You even had me snapping barns...on the way home Saturday. Its catchy! Too bad people can't afford to keep them fixed up. It is sad to see the state of decay many are in. But I guess they aren't needed anymore for one reason.??
ReplyDeleteGreat barn, Mom! The bell tower is so interesting. And, look at all that beautiful corn! Going to try another type of corn. I didn't plant enough to get the corn pollinated, from what people have been telling me, so I have to plant more than just a few seeds. Also, someone suggested them being so close to that block wall kind've "cooked" them with the reflecting 100-115 degree heat! So, at least I have some dried corn stalks to decorate with for Halloween....and we try again. :-)
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest it might be a place for a pulley to help lift the bales of hay:-) I think you are right but I've never seen a barn with a tower like that. There is an old barn near here that is built kind of like that one, but no tower.
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't win the baby contest!
What a great barn! I think you are on to something about the pulley for lifting hay. Hope you have a good evening!
