Buried Alive Under Stuff.

Tonight I am staring at a blank page on my blog and wondering what the thunder I am going to post about. It's been one week since I have. I need to keep up with the pace, not lag behind.

This move is kicking my butt. It would have been easier if I had just hired a moving company to come up, pack everything up and haul it to the new place. But, you don't put your belongings from a 10 room house into a 4 room apartment (well, it could be counted 5 rooms if you count the combo living room/dining room space as 2). But, regardless... it all won't fit!

I have gone through, thrown out, cussed and fussed!! I have worn out, rested and started once again. Do I want this? Should I keep this? Oh, geez whiz, I've had that FOREVER! I couldn't possibly part with it. I look at the mess left in my old house and wonder what the dickens was I thinking accumulating all that stuff. But, it was part of me, part of who I was. And, I'd like to keep some of me around for awhile.

Folks, I could go on and on but I won't bore you any longer. I am just trying to convey to you that I have not dropped off the face of the earth.... just lost under that mountain of 'stuff' that I thought I had to have. I will be back soon but pardon me, please, if I take next week and go to the beach (Nags Head, N.C.) to be with family and to get some rest. Oh, dang... did I say rest? There are going to be three little boys under the age of three with us.

Joy, joy, joy. Who needs rest?

  1. I feel your pain! After my husband of 51 + years died, my son insisted I sell the house and move to a better neighborhood. When you have lived in one place for 50 years, you collect a LOT if stuff!! I gave away a lot to Palmer Home, some to family, etc. I packed the essentials into a smaller house. Then 2 years later, I married Jeep and moved to his house. Much more downsizing! I sincerely hope that I don't have to move again! Merging some of my stuff in with Jeep's was not an easy task! Rest and relax on your get-a-way and come back refreshed and ready to finish settling into your new place. Peace!

  4. When I hear stories like your own I am happy that I've done this two times in my life- at 40 and then again at 60, keeps the 'stuff' down to a manageable pile and reminded me how much stuff is just stuff...good luck in getting the job done. a sweet family photo :-).

  5. We should all learn a lesson from you. Maybe my parents moving around helped keep down there stuff but not really. It just accumulates and multiplies. When we moved her last spring from her independent cottage that she had lived with Dad until he died, we had to sort. She had a list of most of her big stuff and who was to take it. All that went to those of us, we identified what she'd need for 2 rooms and theta went to the apartment by movers. What was left was packed up by the movers to give away, throw away or sell at auction at their discretion. Worked great for us.

  7. Oh, how I understand what you are going through. I have been trying off and on for the past year to slowly get rid of things. I hate being owned by stuff.

My quilting takes up enough space!

  10. You know I've been in the area a relatively short while, but you may not know I've moved 3 times since selling our home of 25 years. All I can say about all the "stuff" is, that you just eat this elephant one bite at a time. In the meantime, enjoy your family and try not to worry.

  13. I'm sure it's a big adjustment and a lot of work, Latane. I hope you enjoy your week at the beach with your family; those 3 little ones will be a joy!

  14. Feeling your pain, Latane, but you're keeping your priorities straight. Hold those babies 1st, and all the rest will fall into place eventually. We finished unpacking last week (after moving here 1 year and 2 months ago). Fifteen crates more...this weekend we've scheduled a yard sale. Hope most of this stuff goes to a new home....the rest will go to charity. I still could get rid of more, but I'm not ready to part with some things yet...Mom's dough tray and sewing machine, Dad's desk, my daughter's teddy bear....how to part with these things is beyond me right now....I'm sure you feel the same way about some of your things, too.
