A Trip To Kroger

You'd think we were going to Neiman Marcus in Chicago or Bloomingdales in New York the way we girls were so excited. Nope...

There was a van of about a dozen of us heading to the brand-spanking new Kroger Super Store in North Suffolk.

When I lived in Alabama there was a medium sized grocery store about 10 miles from home. That is, until Wal-Mart moved into town, lock, stock and barrel and all of a sudden we had a huge store to shop in.

Then we moved to Wakefield and the large grocery stores were 25 or 30 miles away. Oh, heck, wait a minute. I forgot the Food Lion in Windsor 18 miles from the house. Still quite a jaunt.

But, now I've moved to the 'city' where I have my pick of grocery stores, large and small within a short distance. Food Lion is now about 3 blocks from my apartment. So, you'd think I was plenty satisfied... No, I wanted to see that big new Kroger... so I joined the rest of the gals from The Commons and we headed for a bunch of fun and shopping.

Oh my... what a feast for sore eyes... walking into that place and everywhere I looked was fresh, beautiful fruit and vegetables.

And, shelf after shelf of every imaginable thing you could think of. The most gorgeous flowers

and even jewelry.  Among other things, I bought some yummy roasted vegetables

 and a container of ready-to-eat cheese-broccoli soup.

I'd run into one of the gals from time to time. We all were lost in that big place, didn't know where to find anything but we'd help each other, pointing out where we found this item or that. When we crawled back in the van we all were pumb tuckered out. But, we were a happy bunch. I'll be going back. That cheese-broccoli soup was to die for.

Do you have a favorite grocery store? My favorite was Farm Fresh until I went to Kroger the other day.

  2. They seem to have everything there that you might need! All of our Food Lion stores closed years ago and we don't have Kroger. Publix is THE store here.

  3. Kroger just opened their new store in our town, so I know how you feel.
It is fun just to linger in each nook and cranny of the store.

  4. We've had two Kroger stores close by for years - 5 mins. south or north - but I don't visit them too often. Bob will pop into the one south now and then as it's next to the Post Office, but for a regular grocery store we usually shop Harris Teeter, and of course spend a small fortune in Trader Joe's and Costco! Glad you liked the new store - they do have good produce - and I may have to treat Bob to that soup as I know he'll love it!

    Hugs - Mary

  6. All we have here in our neck of the woods is H E B, Wal Mart Super Centers and ONE Organic grocer. I like H E B best. Good prices, excellent staff, and a close pharmacy. lol

I love cream of broccoli soup...have you ever tried Jason's Deli soups? Like you said "To die for" good.

  7. Cute post! Yes, Kroger and Frys (we have here) are the same company. It's usually where I do my shopping. :-) Oh, I went by Gawena's Window and really enjoyed it. Hope she will visit me as well! I haven't checked out Talking Trash yet, but will.

  8. I'm so glad to find someone else who loves to grocery shop! It's not a chore to me, and shopping the produce section is like looking at eye candy with all those beautiful jewel colors.

I only drive myself to a local Publix now and I love that everyone is so friendly there, so willing to help and to start carrying anything I want that they don't have. But when my husband drives me I love to go to a Harris Teeter further away or to my favorite, a Whole Foods Market. Their produce department is amazing with lots of locally grown produce and meats.

Do you ever get sensory overload in a new store that you're not yet familiar with? No one else seems to know what I'm talking about but I can get a little flustered and almost feel dizzy in a new store.

  9. Looks like a fun place to go grocery shopping! I usually shop at a HyVee or Fareway. My all-time favorite shopping place is a thrift store, but I can't get groceries there.

  10. Wow! That produce is beautiful! I was just telling my son today (we were having a phone conversation; he's near Denver and I'm here in Northeast Oregon) that we're 80 miles from the nearest stop light and shopping is extremely limited. We do have a small Safeway, but I find our local grocers have better produce and meats. A lot of our friends here drive to Costco in Idaho and Washington and stock up. It's been an adjustment for me the past year. Glad you have your girl friends to go shopping with; that's great! ~ Nancy

  11. Oh yes...we all have the favorite grocery store here in Rochester, NY(where they originated) and that is WEGMANS! It is so beautiful and so wonderful. Everyone shops there. There are many here in Rochester but they have now gone east and south. They are remarkable!

  12. i have a food lion and a kroger, each about 5-10 minutes from me...my oldest son works at our kroger and i am there almost every day. ours is a little on the small side compared to some of the bigger ones but it has everything i need. i very rarely go to walmart. we have a larger kroger across town and i've been meaning to go into there one day and see what kinds of different things they have but i love my kroger. i know all the employees, i know where everything is at and i am always running into friends while i'm there :) that soup sounds yummy!

  13. So glad you have such a marvelous place to get your groceries! We had visitors from another country way back when we first moved here---they were on a sort of diplomatic mission, and had been taken to DisneyWorld and Washington, etc. to see the country by their delegation.

They were with us for several days, and we took them around town to several notable places. On their last night, we were lingering over dinner here at home, and Chris asked what was their favorite destination on the trip. Without hesitation, one of them said, "O'Malia's grocery." (A loval chain, and quite interesting to me, as well, for they had lobster tanks and salmon pools and an entire room of coffees and teas---but above DisneyWorld? The Lincoln Memorial?). Quite the eye-opener to those of us used to the bright aisles of clean, fresh vegetables, and so much bounty beneath a roof.

If you're anywhere near a Panera or a Sam's, they have the most fabulous broccoli/cheese soup, and the cartons like yours are available at Sam's in a two-pack. Maybe your WalMart would have them in the grocery.

  14. In the small VA town we called home for 12 years, there were 2 supermarkets, Fresh Pride and the larger Food Lion. The Fresh Pride stores shut down and that left only FL so our choices were limited. Now living in Nashua, NH was have such choices: Market Basket, Shaw's, Hannaford's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods...it is such a treat going into any of these cause any one is larger than what we experienced in VA. Maybe a Kroger's will open here too!

  16. This made me smile. We have many Krogers (as common as Foodlion) back home. Its been such a point of constant aggravation for me since moving here not finding such abundance of fresh produce as you experienced. I'm glad you have a Superstore near you. There's a Krogers about 11 miles away from us that we shop at, but its just a normal sized market, I'm afraid, but its a little slice of "home" for me :) . Have a nice week, Latane
