My Mom's Little Booklet

Got up early (before sunrise) this morning and was looking for something to do when I spied a box of old letters I need to scan one of these days. Why not do a couple this morning? And, the first one I pulled out was not a letter but a little booklet my Mom had made in school.

Mom was born in 1904. Let's see, if she started school when she was six, then that would have been about 1910. Since there is a IV written under her name on the front of this little booklet I am thinking maybe that means she was in the fourth grade. So, now we are figuring this treasure was made about 1914. It's over 100 years old!!

So, I thought I'd share my find with you this morning. And, link up with Tom over at Tuesdays Treasures.

                                                                      THE COVER

SECOND PAGE

It has 12 pages in all. Just such a precious thing to have, with my Mom's own handwriting.

  2. What a wonderful treasure. I love the turkey on the front cover and would be tempted to work this into a Thanksgiving vignette when the holiday rolls around. Maybe under a cloche with a picture of mom.

  8. This is such a fabulous find for you Latane - I'm sure it brought a tear to your eye seeing your mother's beautiful 4th grade handwriting, and her artistic talent at that time. My own dear mother was born in 1911 but I have nothing really from her childhood other than one family photo. I do have a lot of letters she wrote me from when I came to the USA in 1962, and just yesterday I found some handwritten recipes she sent me back in the '60's. In those earlier days children learned good penmanship, well even in my day when I used to enter 'handwriting contests' - today it's not like that sadly.

Stay warm - good weather here for staying close to home off the icy roads, and digging through family memories!
    Hugs - Mary

  9. What a precious treasure! I wonder does it correspond to your other samples of her "penmanship" or did it later change to that well-practiced "Spencerian" of the days when we all got our own fountain pens and made those lovely swoops and swirls between the lines til we could write straight across the page. A lady's handwriting was just as much a mark of her manners as her speech and grooming and ease at table.

My mother was left-handed, and made to write with her right hand, so she never did master all the perfection of the other girls' 'hand' but she COULD write or draw with either hand, so that was a great thing.

This is a great and wonderful bit of your past, and I hope you'll share more of those delightful pages again. These were kind of our own moms' generation's bits and bobs of samplers, only on paper, and kept for memories only.

And just the confirmation that our mothers WERE little girls, with probably pinafores and scuffed Buster Browns, and not born grown-ups, but making their own ways in the world, til they emerged as those sweet ladies in the starched dresses, with their own kitchens and children to love.

I'm just carried away with old-time stuff myself this morning, so I'm SO charmed by yours. Stay well and warm, my friend, and I've been thinking about you as that great pattern of vivid garish colour spread across the weather screen toward you this week.

    1. On Tom's Main Page under his header is a list of 'pages'. I simply clicked on the Classic Tab and the link is up and running on that page. I don't like the Magazine tab that seems to be the default page when I click on it.

  14. I would have sat in the floor and cried if I had found that. It really does pull at my heartstrings. Just look at that cursive writing. That has certainly gone bye-bye over the last years. Treasure it. Wrap it in tissue paper. That is what the Smithsonian does back upstairs were they keep the quilts. My daughter’s mother-in-law was the landscape architect for the Smithsonian so she got me a pass to go into the back. Nothing is kept in plastic. It will kill whatever is in it. They totally used tissue paper back at that time..
