It's Friday, Folks

1. I'm getting a little better with every pastel that I do. Maybe I'll get good at it one of these days. I'd done the face of a cat recently (which I will not show you). I mean I do have some pride!! Tried it again.. it's better this go around.

2. It's going to snow this afternoon here in coastal Virginia. That probably means that the Valentine Spaghetti dinner the staff at the Commons was going to treat us to tonight will be cancelled. Nobody wants to be on the road when it's snowing!!

3. Last yesterday afternoon I noticed a heron standing in this bitterly cold wind, hoping for a bite to eat. Just look at the reflection in the water!

then he started walking toward me....still more reflection. I seldom see that.

and he finally settled next to the bank. I may have to try my hand at a pastel of this shot.

4. Back last November I kept watching my Christmas Cactus but not a single bud appeared. Someone told me I should have kept it in the dark for about 6 weeks so I popped it into the guest shower to sit a spell. That made it very late in blooming so now I have a Valentine Cactus!!

5. On days like this I wish I had a fireplace. I'd snuggle up on the sofa with my sweetie. But, I don't so I will just have to look at an old picture I have of a fire roaring away. It looks so warm and inviting....

Happy Valentine's Day.

  5. That pastel is wonderful, I think. I always wonder how the birds survive the freezing cold. My mom always kept her Christmas cactus in the basement but I don't remember for how long. But she usually had it blooming around Christmas...and I wish I had a fireplace, too.!

  8. Wonderful post First of all...again the cat pastel is awesome! Yes, you should do one of that heron shot! Love all the heron photos. They must be so miserable in all this cold. Someone else posted a photo of one huddled in place in the snow! Hope you don't get too terribly cold and wet snow...and not much wind, and that it's over soon! Love your "Valentine cactus!" We have a fireplace but never use it. We asked the owner when we moved in if the chimney had been cleaned and he said no, that he would get it done, but he never did, and we are scared to build a fire in it. I will have a fireplace in Oregon, and this time I want a proper mantle (the one here is rounded, and has no mantle). Besides cost and square footage concerns, my top three priorities for the new house will be a mantle on the fireplace, a two car garage and/or storage shed, and a elder-friendly bathroom. Lots of light also is important to me. I would LOVE wood floors (a lot of the houses have them) and other things, but they aren't in the top priority. I'm dying to see what Yvonne & Jack end up with and will send you photos once they are up there and getting in their new place. Will answer your email soon!

  9. I would love a fire like that too! Love that your cactus is flowering for valentines, mine has been going since November, they are odd plants at times aren't they! Hope that your dinner doesn't get cancelled and you don't get all that snow. Thank you for joining Five On Friday, Happy Valentines! xx

  11. Your pastel drawing is amazing; so beautiful. I loved the photo of the bird and the show in the water. I hope you have a good weekend and that the snowstorm isn't too bad. We're having a heat wave down here in southern California. Enjoy your day, Pat :)

  15. Your cat is really nice - you captured a wonderful expression! Too bad about the spaghetti dinner - hope the heron found something to eat. The cactus bloom is so pretty. Hope the cold doesn't last long there. x Karen

  16. The Great Blue Heron will make an excellent subject for your pastels. Great reflection. That fireplace looks inviting on this cold day. I follow the blog of a pastel artist and have learned a lot: http://kemstudios.blogspot.com Now I need to DO.

  18. That is a marvelous painting, well done, you have a real talent. Nice bird shots & that fire looks so cosy. It's Summer here in Tasmania so we'll have to wait a few more months for a warm fire, although it's nice not having to pay all that extra money out for firewood.
