Today my daughter, Susan, drove up hwy 9N, me in the passenger seat, camera in hand. We had a great time. The road was two-laned, not much traffic and there was lots to see. More hills,
mountains, valleys, the river,
The Palisades rock formations, some cute little towns, fancy houses than I had figured on.
In Rockland County, there were a lot of rock quarries (do they mine rock?) Whatever!! This one is located in Haverstraw, New York.
Nearing West Point, we came to Bear Mountain State Park. Lots to do there but we'll have to come back some time to take all that in.
and Bear Mountain Bridge. This bridge was finished in 1924 and at that time was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Nineteen months later it lost it's title to a bridge in Pennsylvania.
Then there is the Army's military academy. We drove around, did no tours (I am lucky these days to drive around, not so great at walking).
This statue is of Thaddeus Kiseluszko. He designed the West Point garrison defenses during the height of the Revolutionary War. He also wrote the manuel about horse artillary which became an academy textbook.
Of course, I had to have my picture taken.

The cadet cathedral is of Gothic Revival architecture. It has the largest chapel pipe organ in the world.

There is an Amtrak service that runs along the Hudson River. What a view you would have on that train. This is the same train line as featured in the movie "A Girl On The Train".
And, Michie Stadium. All I can say is Go Navy, Beat Army. (sorry all you army folks)
"AIN'T" nothing better than getting in the car, all gassed up, and heading out for a nice long adventure, seeing new sights as the miles roll by!! Enjoyed the pictures and that's a real nice on of you sitting on the monument. Looks like some pretty scenery that way! How long did y'all drive?
ReplyDeleteWhat fun a good drive is with a good driver! You look right at home seated at the bottom of that monument. 🙂 All I know of the Hudson River Valley, I learned in art class. I do love that style of painting and I can see why those artists of old had such beautiful views.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun thing to do. That state park looks like a place to explore. I'm trying to figure out a little trip like that today for my mother's birthday but there is so much flooding we have to be careful where to go.
ReplyDeleteReally great post about a really great trip! Russell and I went to West Point once also, and saw Washington's headquarters too near there on the Hudson. I was reminded also about the Hudson River painters while there. It's such a beautiful place! Love the shots, especially of you enjoying yourself!
