Friday Night Jammin'

What do you do when a friend invites you and dau. Shirley to a free concert? You go of course.  The band playing was the Blue Aces from Langley Air Force Base.

I expected some march music, you know Sousa and all that stuff, and some military tunes, certainly their air force song. But, no, it was '70s tunes, Stevie Wonder, Janice Joplin etc, etc.

When my girls were teens I heard a lot of that type music and their memory of that time is me or their Dad yelling 'Turn that radio down'. Gee, if they'd had ipods back then ... oh well, they didn't. Dad and I were used to slower, softer music like Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney. 'Turn down the volume'.

I (in the middle with the long orange skirt on) was sitting there enjoying the band, my foot keeping time and I'd lean over and whisper in D Shirley's ear 'What's the name of that one?' I did recognize 'Hey Girl' and 'Heard it through the grapevine', the last one of course, because of that silly California raisin commercial.  Friend Kate is sitting next to me (in the white shirt), Shirley is taking pictures.

The band was very good, the two singers excellent, the weather was cool and Shirley and I had front row seats. I really had a good time.  Even Ben Franklin enjoyed it. He's on the bench there in the park, see, right in the middle of the picture.
