Cluck-cluck... Cock-a-doodle-do

I have no idea when I started liking chickens!! Maybe it was when I was given a pet bantam rooster when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Poor little critter died during a cold, cold winter. Or it could have been those 100 laying hens my husband decided we needed so he bought them from our landlady and we became egg farmers. Not that I liked them very much at that time. Dang, they were noisy and they'd peck at me when I tried to retrieve eggs from under them.

It could have been after my husband retired from the Navy and we settled on a farm in Alabama. He HAD to have chickens. There was this one stupid hen that found out how to escape the pen and there she'd be, waltzing across the back yard like she owned the place. So, I'd go out and try to catch her and she'd half fly/ half run away from me. One day I hollered SQUAT in her direction and lo and behold she settled her body down on top of her pointy little feet and stayed there until I picked her up and put her back in the pen. The children still tease me, years later,  about the hen that I trained to squat when I needed to catch her.

Along this period of time, my aunt gave me two white chickens that she had sitting in her kitchen. That began a collection. Now mind you, this collection is very small but I like my chickens reigning roost over my cooking area. I bought another one or two in Alabama. I love this hen sitting on her eggs and Mr. Rooster standing guard.

I got a couple more in Virginia..another hen and rooster. Look at the red comb on that bird!!

I like them for company as I prepare a meal. They know I won't cook them... and I know they can't become the main entree for us. Those kinds of chickens I adore.

  1. chickens are grand creatures...I have a blog friend in Ireland who has had 3 in her back yard for several months now. if I lived somewhere that allowed it I'd have me 2 or 3 chickens myself! I like your chicken collection...perfect in the kitchen. I used to decorate my kitchen with sunflowers but sunflower decor has been more difficult to find in recent years (I have several items I found in thrift stores)...BUT I discovered I can still find my sunflowers when chickens are involved. So my kitchen decorating now is a combo of sunflowers and beautiful chickens!

  2. I love chickens too! It must be an Alabama thing. :) We got rid of our last chickens when they quit laying a year or two ago.

I'm so glad you're joining in with me on the blog party Friday. I hope to learn something from the other bloggers. I'll see you there!

  6. Well, how pretty your chickens look.
Much nicer than if they were scratching around in the yard.

  7. Great Our World post, Mom! I love your chicken collection, too. For some reason I inherited your admiration for these birds! I'd love to own a few right now, as I'm sure you know--the kind that lay eggs, of course not the shelf-decorating kind, though I love those too! :-)

  9. I love your story!
But isn't the hen smart to figure out how to escape?!
Hubby loathes chicken. He had to kill them when he was a kid. Not good!

I love the pretend chickens, too!
    Cheers from Cottage Country!

  11. Oh I love your chicken stories! Especially the "squat" one!! I remember getting some chicks one Easter, but they kept running out from under the picket fence!! What were my parents thinking :D
