but a look on the internet revealed that they are really mud daubers. That makes sense since they make their long, narrow nests out of mud. They are wasps but seldom sting. Thank goodness for that!!
I reckon the mud daubers around here have taken a liking to my garage. I found these interesting little 'homes' clinging to the inside of my garage wall.
That's part of OUR WORLD meme.

They have very elaborate homes. It would be interesting to watch them build one. Great shots and I love your dogwood blossom header.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen their nests in quite a while. I remember seeing them a lot as a child. If you catch them building, that would be an awesome post! Maybe you'll be lucky. I am still feeding lots of honeybees at my hummingbird feeders. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of those where I live, too!
ReplyDeleteThe wasps are out here in numbers looking for a place to build.Last year we had lots of mud daubers , but have not seen them yet.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen those mud daubers before, but we occasionally see wasps around here.
ReplyDeleteWe get hornets that build paper nests. Their sting is very hurtful, so if we see a nest starting it gets knocked down right away. - Margy
ReplyDeleteAmazing critters and beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeleteYes I have! I love insects for their color and design and I love watching them. Mud daubers always hang around my hose end where the water drips out and makes good soft mud. They literally put a mouthful of mud into their mouths, fly off and stick it onto their new building site. Sometimes if you break open the nest, you will see larvae inside.
ReplyDeleteI find these critters fascinating! I have never seen them build a nest, but they used to hang around the edge of our pool, hoping that someone would do a belly flop and splash water all over the place.
