A trip to Captain Chuck-A-Mucks

Never heard of Rescue? Never heard of Captain Chuckamuck's Grill? Oh well, let me take you there.
We were driving along this back road from Smithfield, Virginia, baby D. in tow and daughter Shirley at the wheel. There couldn't be anything in these sticks, now could there be?

We turned down a narrow road, past some houses, right down to nothing... whoops we had missed our turn. Was there a sign? I don't recall one. So we go back and turn between some more houses down this little lane and headed down toward the water. Hmmm, I think to myself, it can't be here. No one would ever find it!!

But, there it was... A square building sitting near the water's edge.

A cute sign on the side of the building.

The three of us get out and head inside. We had heard the seafood was great but by now we had our doubts. We opened the door and inside are picnic tables covered with paper, a pink paper pig hanging from the ceiling waving a flag!!

And, Guy Fieri from Drive-ins, Diners and Dives, his picture was there on the wall, autographed. This place had been featured on his television show.

We had eaten somewhere else a bit earlier, wasn't hungry and we had come to this hidden hideaway to purchase a Chuckamuck's tee shirt. But, you can't be rude and not order SOMETHING!! I mean, surely we had a wee spot in our tummys for ... yes, ice cream.

                                                 D. loved it. Notice the spoon in each hand.

His Nana helped. I think I had something a little more seafoody, like hushpuppies, which were very good. But, that trip was a TRIP. Definately not what we expected but we see why people love it.

  1. this sounds a bit like a more up to date version of the "Duck-In" in Virginia Beach...the original (which I'd known about practically all my life) was torn down by the late 1980s and the "new" one was apparently torn down around 2005. The night I met Don, he, my girlfriend who introduced us and I went to eat at the "original" Duck-In in the wee early hours of the morning 9 November 1981. By the late 1980s they had torn it down and built the new one...but they never had the atmosphere or the good food of the original! Captain Chuck-A-Mucks sounds like the same kind of fantastic seafood place! Wow...wish I was in Virginia I'd look up the Captain!

  3. My husband & I visited Smithfield last summer. We asked in one of the shops where we might eat dinner. This was the place they sent us to. I don't think we would have found it if they hadn't told us about it. I think it has a great name and we enjoyed our dinner. The ice cream looks awfully good too.

  6. Chuckamuck's is about 2 miles from where we live! We go there occasionally - more for the atmosphere, since neither of us are seafood folks. When we had a boat, it was fun to tie up at the dock and go inside for dinner. Maybe we should have lunch sometime since we live so close!
