A Drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway

There is something about the rolling spendor of mountains, all clothed in green, dotted with spots of white clouds or fog that gives a person a sense of calm and peace. I just spent two delightful days in the mountains with my friend, Les.

It being earlier than tourist season, we were often the only ones meandering up the curvy mountainous inclines and stopping at overlooks. Then a couple of motorcyclists would rip through our serenity and within seconds it would be quiet again.

Once a deer darted across in front of our car but it, too, was soon out of sight in the underbrush.

The rododendron was just beginning to bloom. The dogwoods were on their way out and there was a lot of wonderful little wildflowers.

We stopped at most of the overlooks to view God's wonderous beauty.

This scene reminded me of a rollercoaster.

The 19th century farm at Humpback Rocks. Closed right now to the public but open soon.

An interesting fence.

Here the road was carved out of a mountain of stone.

the vista was endless........

Our car and our view. Too soon the trip was over. However, we only did half the Blue Ridge Parkway through the state of Virginia from Charlottesville to Roanoke. We'll have to go back and do the other half south of Roanoke another time.

  6. There is nothing better than riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway--especially in spring and fall. I love it!!!!! I recognize all of the places you visited.. You do need to come on south --to see more beauty. The area about Craggy Gardens (near Asheville) is fabulous in June with the rhododendrons blooming.

    Great set of photos.

  7. Wow, what a beautiful spot you picked for a scenic drive and overlook. Great photos you have posted. Beautiful shots. The homestead cabin below is a great place to see how the early ones lived and survived here in the mountains.
