"D" is for Smokey

First of all, just let me say....

I am not a DOG person!! I don't like them, don't want one.

That being said, I am choosing DOG as my entry this week for ABC WEDNESDAY

See, there was this one DOG that was special to our family. His name was Smokey. My son claimed him but we all became attached to him. Michael was about 7 or 8 years old when our DOG, Queenie, had two little male puppies. Here is Michael with tiny Smokey and big sister, Shirley, has Albert in her arms.

When we moved from California back east we couldn't bring but one on the long journey. So, Smokey made the cross-country trip with us.

He loved to play with the children.

And, with other dogs.

He and Michael would wander all over our farm, climbing hills. Michael was in high school when it came time to lay Smokey to rest.

He'd been with us for a long, long time. Doesn't he have the sweetest face?

Yeah, I don't like DOGS. But, I sure do miss Smokey.

  1. Kids really love dogs! Like you, I've had them when my son was at home, but I don't want one either! Smokey looks like the last dog we inherited when Joe went to college! We missed him long after he was killed on the highway.

  2. Love your pretty Valentine theme on your blog! Sweet pictures of your children when they were youngsters. We haven't had a dog for years, I really do like them and would enjoy having another one. My problem is traveling- with two of my girls living a good distance away I just don't want to get tied down with the responsibility of a pet, and having to choose staying home with my dog over them. Sounds ridiculous, but I could see that happening!

  3. My husband's dog was also called Smokey. His dog had a distinctive smile apparently. We have had no dog here. We did have two cats when daughters were young but no more.

  4. Aaaaahhhh! What a cutie. We had dogs when I was a child. You're too busy for a dog, aren't you?!

  5. I had dogs come and go in my life growing up and when my kids were young. Now as adults, they have all sorts of animals here on the farm, so I get to love all of them. Besides, my cat would be offended if I brought a dog into the house- she rules.

  6. He looked such a lovable dog Smokey.
I love Dogs but my husband is allergic to them so we settle for cats and they're good companions.
    Such lovely family photo's.
    Best wishes,

  7. This is a great tribute to sweet old Smokey! The problem is that we get attached to our pets in such a way that we are so sad when we have to take leave them.
    Thank you for your post.
    Have a great week.

  8. Now who in the world could ever resist that sweet face? Such a fun little pup you had. We had a little dog when my son was growing up that I feel the same way about 25 years later. Schotzi was the best dog we ever had. . .a toy poodle mix. The runt of the litter, and a friend to everyone. I'll always miss that sweet dog.

  12. Oh Latane, I can identify with you. I won't go out of my way to get a dog but if one makes it's way into our lives I get attached and suffer when they are laid to rest. Smokey is a cutie.

  15. We don't have dogs now (nor want them --due to all of our traveling, etc.) ---but I miss my dog Duchess too.... I grew up with a cat (Snowball) ---and besides her, Duchess was the only other pet I ever had...

  16. I never was a cat person until I got my first stray Pepper. She was really a mean cat, but she won my heart and turned me into a cat lover. Who knew. - Margy

  21. Smokey looks really cute. I love pets, but prefer not to, because parting makes me very sad. :/ The joy they bring into our lives are priceless though.
